Live and let live or live and let die? Which is the theme of Hamlet. Well defiantly letting live is NOT a prominent theme. Every major character, that isn't a woman, seems to want to kill an other character, or is in cahoodles with a character that wants to kill an other. And other than Hamlet's one 'emo' speech (to be or not to be), there is never any talk about any characters that wish death upon themselves. And we are not sure if Ophelia committed suicide or not.
Although, maybe it can be die and let die, because they all make a mends at the end of the play, when they're all going to die. But that can be because when your starring at imminent death, it's only human to accept.
Obviously, if any character was to be able to live and let live they'd also follow the rule of 'forgive and forget.' Maybe there's one character that does this and that's Gertrude. Gertrude seemed to very easily forget that her ex had died before she married her widow maker/ex's brother.
Hence, the theme of the book is live and let die. Such as all of Shakespeare's tragedies.
ummm... what?
ReplyDeleteSir Slamming,
ReplyDeletePlease let me know who you are so that I can give you credit for this post, which is interesting, but which I worry hasn't made enough movement toward settling on an actual topic (maybe you just need to explain 'live and let die' in the specific context of the play.
Anyway, this is a good start! Use your class time this week to work on drafting your essay!
David Lavender, Sir Slamming is Zac Kula... gonna change the name to Zacula
