Hamlet Essay: How Women are Treated

For my final essay about Hamlet I am going to write about how women were treated. I think that Shakespeare dislikes women and that's why he writes about how they are nothing and how they are here just to cook and bear children. So that's why I am going to focus on Ophelia and Gertrude. In the book, Hamlet treats Ophelia and Gertrude like dogs, and calls them whores and sluts. But obviously that's wrong women are just as equal or more than men, but in the play Gertrude is below the King and Ophelia is told that she is not good enough to marry Hamlet.

  1. Ski4life,

Please let me know who you are so that I can give you credit for this excellent (though brief) post (try to use this forum as a place to explore your ideas at greater length so that I and others might comment on them more helpfully). I like your focus on the question of Shakespeare's portrayal of women. Before you write, you need to go back through the play and track down all the references to Gertrude and Ophelia (as well as review their own lines of dialogue). These will prove useful as you develop your discussion and discover your argument.

    Have fun with this!
