Huck Ducks

Is Huck Finn racist?

>In my opinion Huck Finn is not a racist novel, although the N word is used very commonly throughout the book i believe that was how people spoke back then, and it is how people still speak today.

>Also i believe that the compassion Huck shows Jim proves how Huck is not racist towards Jim.

> I do feel that this book is not racist, and do not see a problem with this book being taught although i did not like this book very much.

  2. Chris,

Though this post seems unduly brief, you nonetheless seem to be on the right track both in arguing that the use of the 'n-word' is not racist, but simply lends to the realism of the book (given that it was the operative term at the time) and in proposing that the novel should properly be considered 'anti-racist' because, in Huck, it provides such a compelling portrayal of a young man overcoming his inherited racist attitudes and rejecting them.

Your going to have to identify specific scenes in the novel that will allow you to develop and defend this latter argument.
