Huck isn't helping Jim to freedom, he's trying to just have a fun adventure, and Jim is displayed as stupid and ignorant from the start.
If Huck wanted to help him, they would have simply gone to Illinois, and that would be the end of that. You can tell Jim grows on Huck, but it seems as more of a travel companion. He plays tricks on him and whatnot, and when he does finally apologize for one, it takes him quite a bit of time.
Towards the end when Tom shows up, it becomes even worse, and rescuing him becomes more of a game for them.
and just as a bonus, when a book uses "nigger" 219 times, which is still just as derogatory now as it was then, it seems a bit excessive.
